Caps in Crucial Contest With Toronto—Running Commentary on a 5-1 Caps Win

First Period Summary:
Lately the Caps are clearly getting out of the gate with a vengeance. Tonight was no exception, out hitting, out shooting, and most important out scoring Toronto 1-0 on a left hand snapshot by Jack Hillen. Late in the 1st period Jay McClement slammed Backstrom into the boards at which point #8 retaliated and was sent to the box. In the final minute of the period Jason Chimera hammered McClement in a 1 on 1 brawl ending the session.

Second Period
Early on Ovie went 1 on 3, was tripped and still only a great save by goalie Ben Scivens saved a goal. But as the power play ran out Martin Erat tipped in a rocket by Ovie to put the Caps up 2 zip. The onslaught continues as Troy Brouwer scores the Caps 3rd goal on a breakaway. Assists to John Carlson and Erat. Ovie just dented the nets on a feed from Mike Green and my man Mike Ribeiro 4-0 Caps. Total domination so far. That’s a league leading 28 goals for #8. 4-0 Caps after 2

Third Period
Just a horrendous defensive effort early on by the Caps allows Toronto to get on board on a semi miss hit by Mikhail Grabovsky. 4-1 Caps. 4 good shots on goal by the Caps on a power play but no goal. Marcus Johansson puts this one on ice for the Caps with his 6th goal of the year again from Green and Ribeiro. 5-1 Caps. So the Caps are now 24-17-2 and poised to get the Division Title and 3rd seed in the East.
