Quint’s Quick Analysis of Terrapins Lacrosse in the Sun

Strength: Defense and goaltending. Poles Michael Ehrhardt, Goran Murray and Jesse Bernhardt are formidable, while goalie Niko Amato can shut the door. The Terps rank No. 5 in team defense.

Weakness: Attack. Archbishop Spalding grad Kevin Cooper (17, 17, pictured) has made the tricky transition from midfield to attack, but the other Terps have combined for only 13 assists. Jay Carlson (St. Paul’s) and Owen Blye must emerge in May. New “timer on” rules prevent Maryland from stalling their way to the final four again.

X-factor: Power outage in College Park. Through the first six contests of 2013, the Terps averaged 15 goals per game. In their past six games, that total has slumped to 7.6. Colgate’s matador defense on Saturday is just what the doctor ordered.

Notable: Maryland hasn’t won an NCAA title since 1975.

Bracketology: If the Terps beat Colgate, they should be seeded in the Nos. 5-8 range, meaning they’ll host in the round of 16.

    A quick roundup of Maryland’s non-revenue sports.

    >> The women’s 4×800-meter relay team set a new school record and won the Penn Relays championship division in 8:44.24 last weekend at Franklin Field.

Thea LaFond placed third in the triple jump and eighth in the high jump, setting a personal best in the former event, while Amber Melville tied for third in the high jump.

For the men, Josh Haghighi earned seventh in the shot put.

    >> Hunting for second place in the ACC, Maryland scored a doubleheader sweep over North Carolina on Saturday — 9-4 and 9-1 — to clinch the series. Junior Candice Beards hit .500 with three doubles and four RBIs. The Terps (29-24, 11-7 ACC) currently sit in third and close the regular season with a three-game series at Virginia Tech.

    >> The Maryland baseball has now won six of seven games, including midweek non-conference victories over Towson (11-3) and Liberty (4-2). Jimmy Reed and Jake Stinnett led the way against Duke over the weekend. Reed earned ACC pitcher of the week honors by hurling a 1-0 complete-game shutout over the Blue Devils, while Stinnett held them to one run on five hits over a career-high nine innings in a 4-1 win.

They visit Clemson this weekend for a three-game set before hosting VCU and then closing out the regular season at home against Boston College.

    >> Women’s tennis standout Vroni Van Berlo was named the Terp of the Week after beating the nation’s 25th-ranked player and winning her doubles match. Maryland squeaked by Duke 4-3, its first ACC win and victory over a top 15 team.
