Lynchburg Heads to Stevenson Wednesday Night for DIII Quarterfinal Matchup

The men’s lacrosse NCAA Second Round came and went on Saturday, and the Lynchburg Hornets defeated Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival Roanoke College to advance to the national quarterfinals.  In the final eight matchup, LC travels to Stevenson University Wednesday, with the game set to begin at 7 p.m.

Stevenson (19-2) defeated Washington College at home Saturday, 17-13.  Three Mustangs combined for 12 of the 17 goals, including five by sophomore Billy Burgoyne.  Freshman goalie Dimitri Pecunes came up big for SU in the win, making 10 saves with six of them coming in the final period.

Just as with Roanoke, this game will be a rematch of a regular season contest that ended with the Hornets losing by one goal.  On the night of March 30, the Mustangs controlled the first and third quarters, outscoring LC 9-2.  However, Lynchburg did the same to SU in periods two and four, which forced the game into overtime.  Michael Crowe tallied his only goal of the game on a man-up situation to give Stevenson the win.

One of the interesting matchups this Wednesday will definitely be between the two goalies.  Davey and Pecunes, both first-year starters, have played extremely well in guiding their teams to the quarterfinals.  These two both come from rival high schools in the famed Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association, Davey from Boys’ Latin and Pecunes from Calvart Hall College.  Those schools will square off in the MIAA A Conference Semifinals Tuesday, providing extra motivation for the net minders.

Another important area in the game will come at the faceoff ‘X’.  Stevenson went 15 for 27 in the first game between the two teams.  Brent Hiken, who is third in the nation in faceoff win percentage at 72.8, won 12 of his 20 attempts in the game.   Curran, the primary faceoff man for LC, won eight of his 19 attempts, but he has gone 15 for 28 in the NCAA tournament.
