Antonio Barton Decides on Tennessee over Maryland

I guess only time will tell if it was the right decision. Time to widen the search.

barton said that he thought tn gave him the best chance start and “win”. now i don’t know a lot about tn’s team but here is what barton could be thinking about md’s team….cleare, didn’t show much as a freshman so you can’t say he looks like he’s going to bust out this year. mitchell…good on the boards but looks like a solid complimentary player, not an elite player. wells. good player with flaws but this is his jr year and the really good players in college leave for the pros after their first or second yr. layman. had a few good games but was extremely inconsistent. in other words he’s not on any pre season all this team or all that team. allen. another guy who had a few good games but extremely inconsistent. that’s what md has in returning players. no blue chip recruits coming in. so what is there for someone outside the program looking to transfer going to get excited about. remember barton isn’t a typical md fan who thinks the terps have an elite program. a typical md fan thinks wells is an all american, layman is just like singler of duke and cleare is the next len elmore.

No one with info/facts would surmise in any way the Md is an elite program. They are middle of he pack at best. And yet there are so many low profile programs, that brought in young aggressive coaches that recruited well, and turned the programs into elite ones for years to come, such as Butler, VC…
An innovative and creative new coach, sells top recruits on them being the difference makers. On their being in a position to lead a program to a high profile progressing program.
Yes even as Edsall is doing with the football program.
I do not see any semblance of this from Turgeon.
This just seems like the continuation of Gary’s descending program. It hurts especially after such high expectations with Turgeon’s arrival, and the initial recruiting buzz.
Does not take genius, to see the necessity of a big time point guard to compete at the championship levels.

At Butler, Brad Stevens served as an assistant for 7 years and took over a 29 win, 1st place, sweet 16 team.

At VCU Shaka Smart took over a 24 win, 1st place, NCAA Tournament team and while he has had major NCAA tournament success he has yet to finish first in the conference in any of his 4 years as a head coach.

In both instances these young coaches took over programs that were already successful and were on the upswing after the previous coaches had left for higher profile jobs. Neither coach had the task of rebuilding a program which is what Turgeon has to do.

Selling top recruits is only one way to build a program. It is much more sustainable to build programs like VCU and Butler where the coaches are targeting lower profile recruits that are most likely 4/5 year players that fit the system well. (Gordon Hayward’s only scholarship offers were from Butler, IUPUI, and Purdue)

Also, I wouldn’t call Barton a big time point guard, he wasn’t even the first guard off the bench at Memphis last year.
