David Shaw is a big ‘ol country boy in the truest sense of the term. A sturdy, thick 6-foot-5, 276-pounder, the newest Maryland Terrapins commitment was reared on a farm in southwestern York County (Pa.) and is the son of a big offensive tackle, Jim, and the younger brother of two former Penn State linemen, Jim Jr. and John.

“We were in the back yard, me, my dad and my brother Jimmy,” Shaw said. “We were practicing coming out of my stance and using my hands. I guess Jimmy got a little irritated that I wasn’t coming out of my stance good enough. So I was like, ‘Alright, let’s go.’ We went head-to-head and we didn’t have any helmets on. He ended up with 17 stitches (laughs).
“I’m a calmer guy, but when I’m on the field it’s all business. I’m not trying to make any friends or anything like that.”
Typically someone with that kind of power and size does not go unnoticed, especially in a talent-rich state like Pennsylvania where high school football recruits are identified fairly early in the game. But Shaw managed to hover just beneath that top-tier talent tracker, picking many college coaches’ interest but not enough to warrant a scholarship offer. Stoner surmised that because Spring Grove hasn’t had tremendous success in recent seasons, and because Shaw was double-teamed on most plays last year, his film didn’t show just how dominant he could be.
“I honestly couldn’t even tell you why,” Shaw said of flying under the radar. “But I’m not too worried about it because Maryland is a great school. I don’t think you could do much better than Maryland.”
Even Penn State, where his two brothers played?
“Yeah, I’d still stick with Maryland [if Penn State offered],” Shaw said. “I really like the coaches, it’s a great school and I just think it’s going to be an exciting few years while I’m there.”
