Incoming freshman offensive lineman Derwin Gray will not enroll at the University of Maryland this fall due to academic issues, an individual with knowledge of the situation said Tuesday evening.

A hyped four-star recruit from local powerhouse Friendship Academy, Gray committed to Maryland last June over offers from Arkansas, Clemson, Ohio State and Oklahoma. He represented an early cog in a local Terps movement to that later added teammate Yannick Ngakoue. Both participated in the Under Armour all-American game.

Gray, who transferred to Friendship from Dunbar, would have helped shore up a relatively inexperienced offensive line and could have challenged for immediate playing time, much like left tackle Mike Madaras did last fall.

Instead, according to the individual with knowledge, Gray will explore his options, including prep school and junior college. Maryland’s hope, the individual said, is for Gray to stabilize his academics and return to the Terps. Summer classes, with Gray’s fellow freshmen, began roughly two weeks ago.
