Rick Jaklitsch Reports on Game 3 in the Bahamas— Terps Win 88-77

After an off day yesterday spent by most of the players, coaches and traveling party diving, snorkeling, deep sea fishing, or on the water slides, the Terps came out for the game this morning looking tired, and after several quick turnovers, found themselves 4-0. The physical nature of the game then seemed to wake them up, and the Terps scored 11 quick points and never trailed again as they rolled to a 88- 77 win against an All Star team flown in from Grand Bahama.

Jake Layman was special again, scoring 25 points (5-8 on 3’s), with 7 rebounds and a steal. Nick Faust started slow, but finished a very unselfish game with 20 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists.
The Terps were bothered by the quickness of the opposition, turning the ball over 20 times.

To combat that 1 way foul calling trend, Turge went long stretches with a 1-3-1 zone. Some of that may have been to make sure he could finish the game without having to insert manages, but the zone was very effective in forcing numerous turnovers, leading to brake away bucket. Layman at the top of that zone is a force. He is really a very rare blend of length and quickness that will give opponents fits in that defense. The Terps forced 24 turnovers from a solid ball handling team.
Other standouts for Maryland were Chuck Mitchell, who after sitting the entire 1st half, made an immediate difference with the physicality he brought to the start of the 3rd quarter, finishing with 12 points on 6-10 shooting in just 17 minutes, and Seth Allen who finished with 15 points (2-3 from 3), 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Each of Seth’s buckets seemed to stop the opponent’s momentum. Dez had 10 points on just 9 shots, with 8 rebounds, 3 assists and a ferocious block. Whenever the game or refereeing gets Dez a little extra motivated, he has a higher gear that no other player has,and boy oh boy is that fun to watch.
