As I watched the replay last night of the Ravens Miami game there was something that struck my eye, made me think of a few years back for validation, and warmed my heart at the same time.
As the game ended I noticed that John Harbaugh was running around the field telling whatever players he could find to go over and thank the Baltimore fans for making the trip down. He truly was touched by the 20,000 Ravens fans who made the journey.
Watching that harkened me back to the first time I met Coach Harbaugh which was (not surprisingly) at a Maryland basketball game. I introduced myself and immediately congratulated him on a great year even though we had lost the AFC Title. His response to me almost verbatim–I am so sorry we didn’t win for all the fans in Baltimore. He was as sincere as one could be and I was a fan forever.
Move up the clock a few years. It is one hour after after the Terps lost to UVA for the NCAA Lacrosse Title. I am leaning against the wall in the tunnel and I don’t have to explain how I felt. I see Coach Harbaugh walking out of the stadium with his daughter and say hello. He stopped , walked over and said he understood how badly myself and Terrapin nation wanted this victory and how badly he felt for everyone.
It’s no accident he is a winner–why–because he gets it.
