Deon Long Writhing in Pain at Wake Forest

What a horrible day for Maryland!! Not so much because the Terps lost an ACC road game in what was their last visit perhaps ever to Wake Forest, but because their 2 playmakers suffered season ending injuries. I just have an empty feeling in the pit of my stomach worrying about the health and recovery of Stefon and Deon.

I am at a loss for words to describe the incredible injury misfortune that has fallen upon my Terps—again. The hope is that being so deep at wide receiver, the Terps have a week to regroup and prepare for a badly beaten and humiliated Clemson squad. The #3 Tigers dropped a 51-14 decision to the vaunted Seminoles after a day of National attention at Clemson.

CJ Brown was totally ineffective Saturday but let’s face it his protection broke down almost from the start. It seemed to me he might have still been suffering from the “Clean, non targeted hit” he received at the hands of FSU’s Jacobbi McDaniel. Caleb Rowe came off the bench and sparked the Terps to a 2 play 80 yard TD drive to pull the Terps within 14 points but Wake answered with a length of the field drive to regain momentum and the rest was history.

Michael Campanaro (from River Hill High in Clarkesville, Md) was sensational reminding everyone of Wes Welker.

Coach Randy Edsall’s Post Game Comments:

Opening statement…

“We didn’t get it done today, as everybody knows. I tried to tell our team that we were going to get their best effort. It was their homecoming, coming off that win (NC State) and plus with our situation in the ACC. But we didn’t come out and match their intensity early on. That’s something that was very disappointing.”

On the status of Deon Long and Stefon Diggs…

“It’s not good. Deon broke his tibia and fibula, both bones in the lower leg. He’s got to go home tonight and probably have surgery later tonight when we get home. Stefon fractured his fibula so there will probably be surgery sometime this week for him.”

On the reaction to the injuries to Long and Diggs…

“It’s unfortunate. I feel bad for both those guys. We got to make sure we move forward. What has to happen is we have to have guys step up and guys go out there and play with the kind of intensity that you have to play with for 60 minutes. We didn’t get that today. I’ve got to do a better job in making sure they listen to me rather than listen to everyone outside of the program and trying to congratulate them on stuff we haven’t even accomplished yet. That’s something that I tried to work hard on this week and we’ll continue to work on it each and every day through the rest of the season. We’ll get to where we want to go.”

On replacing quarterback C.J. Brown with Caleb Rowe in the second half…

“I just felt that things that I saw, it was the best thing for our team to do to try and move the ball in the second half.”

On the play of Caleb Rowe…

“I thought he did some good things and I thought there were some things that he could of done a little bit better. I thought there were some situations there, again, he had to manage, we have 1st-and-10 on the 15 and we got to understand we don’t need a touchdown on the throw. We got to take what the defense gives us and execute. And that’s just something we have to continue to work on and continue to coach.”
