This was a monster win. On the road, a heavy underdog against a team that the Terps haven’t beaten in 23 years, against a Frank Beamer team that has humiliated us over the years, at Lane Stadium, with Bowl eligibility on the line, surviving a phantom pass interference call—on and on.
“Cj was a warrior today” said Edsall post game and indeed he was. Running for 2 TDs including a diving rush at the pylon to win the game. CJ ran for 123 yds and was 12-25 for 125 yards which included several dropped passes.
Before I signed off on Viener Consulting Terp Talk in DC this morning, I casually mentioned to Wayne that if by some miracle Maryland pulled off the upset, then maybe 7 or 8 wins could happen. I really didn’t think there was much of a chance for victory however.
Standouts today—Andre Monroe with 3 1/2 sacks——–Will Likely 179 all purpose yards including the 63 yard punt return for a TD—Brandon Ross 75 yards rushing—-Sean Davis 9 tackles
Randy seemed to have taken a softer approach to this game, meeting with the team council and searching for building confidence into the team. Scott McBrien reflected that the team was extremely unified and focused on the sideline, even after some of the misfortunes on the field today.
It’s been a while since I remember being this emotional after the victory but knowing Coach Edsall like I do, I tire of the cheap shots he seems to always be receiving. Not tonight— because this was a BIG win anyway way you look at it–Maryland is now 6-4 and you can feel the upside. I think back to the shellacking the Hokies poured on Maryland on November 19, 2004 when he relentlessly piled up the score on the way to a 55-6 humiliating victory. Many times on my show, I said one day he would pay for it. Today Maryland ruined his season. Too bad Frank.
Randy Edsall Post Game
“We’re so proud of these young men. They had a resolve this week that they wanted to change things around. All credit goes to the players for getting it fixed and playing their hearts out with everybody contributing and everybody doing their job to help each other. It’s a beautiful win for us. All the credit goes to the players. Our coaching staff and everybody involved with the University of Maryland couldn’t be happier with what they accomplished today.”
