Ohio State 76 Terps 60–Analysis of a Disappointing Loss

Maryland must figure a way to win these out of conference road games. Tonight OSU was clearly better. The Terps fell behind early and played catch up unsuccessfully.

Here are the highlights of Coach Turgeon’s post game comments:

On Ohio State’s performance

“I thought Ohio State was terrific. They came out making shots and they got

a lot of confidence off of that. I thought they executed at a high level.

Craft was in total control of the game on both ends of the floor, and they

made shots. We didn’t make shots tonight.

On the last Big Ten/ACC Challenge before becoming a member of the Big Ten

“We really don’t get caught up in all that stuff. We just come play the

game. We knew we were playing a Top 10 team – a really good team – with

great guards and a great coach. Next year, we’ll play our old league and it

won’t be that big of a deal. It will be a game for us that we will have to

play well in.”

On the Buckeye defense against Maryland

“I think Aaron Craft is at another level. They did a great job on Jake

[Layman]. He couldn’t get going. He had some open looks that he missed …

We had a lot of guys that didn’t play well. Maybe it’s them [Ohio State],

maybe they’re just that good.”

Smotrycz–15 points 7 rebounds–on Terp Talk last night I figured the shots would be there for Evan because of the concentration on shutting down Jake. They were and he took advantage especially early in the game.

Layman–strong Buckye defense on Jake–1-9 shooting and only 2 points

Wells–played well in the 2nd half –finished with 19 points–needed his scoring early with Jake having an off night–but Dez only had a deuce in the 1st half

Mitchell–12 points–11 rebounds –strong game

Peters —tough place for Freshman with the tremendous defense of Aaron Craft and Scott—4 TOs and 4 assists

Faust–5 points on 2-9 shooting–1-7 from the 3 point line

Shaq Cleare — started–2 points 0 rebounds

    Bruce-
This game shows where we are as a program right now.

Mediocre. Not even in the game. Such a huge gap in talent too.

We were very excited about the Bigs the last 2 years. Shaq and Mitchell have not lived up to anywhere near what we thought they would.
Dodd has been a total non factor.

Layman would be dynamite in a blue uniform. Whether Duke/KU/UNC. If he had a supporting cast, a legit wing like him could be a NBA lottery pick.
But, we don’t have a PG or a SG.

It’s so frustrating that we just don’t seem to ever get better from where we were 2 years ago. Actually, more like 2004/5, with that 1 fluke year when Gary was in his last year.

Gary’s teams always exceeded expectations. Turgeons have been huge disappointments. Non-factors. Nothing special. Just, eh.

Has to be the coaching. Assistant coaching most likely. When players don’t get better, and don’t play smart, that’s assistants.

Tough to compete with good team without a legit point guard. Until Peters develops or Allen returns it’s going to be a struggle. Too bad Pe’Shon didn’t stick around, he seems to be playing really well at USC thus far.

Still don’t understand why Shaq gets the start over Mitchell who outplays him every week.
