Shin-Soo Choo: The Leftover Elite Free Agent
My ongoing theory with Choo is that he’s going to sign a bargain-level deal, and five months from now we’ll wonder how his new team landed him at such a steep discount. While not regularly viewed by fans as a superstar-level player, Choo was a five-win guy in 2013 per Fan Graphs and looked rejuvenated after his move away from Cleveland.
He had injury problems in 2011 but has stayed healthy and effective in four of the past five seasons. At age 31, Choo should be well within his prime for a majority of his contract and can be shifted to DH if needed to hide his defensive deficiencies. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports is reporting that the Orioles have begun giving Choo consideration going into the winter meetings:
Heyman correctly points out Baltimore needs an outfielder and a DH, roles Choo could theoretically shift between as needed.
