The Ravens will get the league-maximum four compensatory picks, including one for Ed Reed. Even though he was released, the secret equation that the NFL uses to determine these picks is based on the size of the contract as well as playing time for the new team. So, here are the four players that the Ravens will get compensatory picks for: Reed, linebacker Paul Kruger, linebacker Dannell Ellerbe and cornerback Cary Williams. Safety Bernard Pollard won’t net a comp pick because he was cut, and the Ravens’ signings (Elvis Dumervil, Chris Canty, Michael Huff and Marcus Spears) won’t count against them because all of those free agents were released. Compensatory picks are only for players who leave after their contracts have ended.
What should the Ravens receive for those four players? I see the best-case scenario as this: one in the third round (Kruger), two in the fourth round (Ellerbe and Williams) and one in the fifth (Reed). The worst-case one is two in the fourth (Kruger and Ellerbe), one in the fifth (Williams) and one in the seventh (Reed). Remember the Ravens don’t currently have picks in the fourth and fifth rounds because they traded them to the Jacksonville Jaguars for left tackle Eugene Monroe. Since 1994, Baltimore has received the most compensatory choices, 37, followed by Green Bay with 30.
