It turns out the University of Maryland had more remaining recruits targeted than four-star offensive tackle Damian Prince. On Feb. 1, the Terps extended an offer and received a commitment from senior safety Antwaine Carter, a 6-foot-2, 180 pounder from Westlake High (Waldorf, Md.). It comes in the wake of Norcross (Ga.) High safety Jordan Noil’s decommitment from the Terps.“I can’t even describe how I’m feeling right now; my body was like shaking,” Carter said. “I was so stressed going through this process, so it feels great to have a home the next few years. I just got the offer and I committed.”
Carter said he’d been in touch on and off with his recruiter, Mike Locksley, since the spring of 2013, though he never sensed a scholarship was imminent. Even in the last couple weeks during the open period Carter’s main interest was from the likes of Towson and Delaware State. But Feb. 1 Locksley called Carter’s father and asked if he and Antwaine could come up to College Park for a visit and to meet the coaches. “And that’s when I got the offer. Coach [Randy] Edsall took me into his office, asked me if I liked the school, asked me how I felt, and then he said he wanted me to be part of the family,” Carter said. “Then I took a deep breath, closed my eyes and said, ‘Yes, I do want to be a Maryland Terrapin. I want to be part of the first Big Ten class.” |
