Sheptock Advances to Quarterfinals in NCAA Championships

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Maryland wrestler Jimmy Sheptock moved on to the quarterfinal round with two wins on the opening day of the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships at the Chesapeake Energy Arena on Thursday.

Five Terrapin wrestlers started the day and four will continue on to Friday’s action. Christian Boley and Shyheim Brown rebounded from first round losses with wins in their wrestlebacks while Spencer Myers won in the opening round and dropped his second match.

Sheptock, the top seed at 184 pounds, began his day against unseeded Ben Stroh of Wyoming and used a takedown and 2-point near fall in the third period to seal a 10-3 decision victory. The senior’s second match came against Air Force’s Devin Hightower, who upended 16th-seed Nick Vetterlein in the first round. Sheptock utilized a double leg takedown in the waning moments of the first period and ended up with a 4-0 decision.

The sixth-place in finisher in 2013 will wrestle Friday morning to try and earn All-American status for the second straight season. The Northhampton, Pa. native will face Blake Stauffer of Arizona State in the quarterfinals.
