Terrapin Nine Defeats NC State to insure Series Victory

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Freshman starter Mike Shawaryn held 11th-ranked NC State to one run over seven innings and centerfielder Charlie White hit his first career home run to help Maryland defeat the Wolfpack, 7-4, Saturday afternoon at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium to clinch the series.

Shawaryn, who entered the contest with the fifth-lowest ERA in the ACC, scattered four hits over his seven innings of work and struck out six, one shy of his career high, to improve to 5-0 on the season. The Carneys Point, N.J., native threw 62 of his 88 pitches for strikes and only faced four batters over the minimum.

“He is a money guy. He just makes big pitches, when he has to make big pitches,” said head coach John Szefc. “He can reset himself as quickly as any guy I’ve been around, certainly for a freshman. He’s very consistent. You know what you are getting out of Mike Shawaryn 99.9 percent of the time.”
