“When you go into the lion’s den, you don’t tippy-toe in. You carry a spear. You go in screaming like a banshee. ”

The above Brian Billick quote was from the Tennessee Titan game in the Ravens first Super Bowl run. Does this apply to Maryland’s upset win on Saturday at Penn State?

Attitude, desire, wanting to win more then the opponent–these are but a few of the reasons Maryland won at Happy Valley. Randy had this team at a fever pitch —ready to play the most important game in the Edsall era. Not shaking hands was wrong (I keep telling myself that). But the emotion that led to that mistake was spot on. I loved the swagger. I loved not being bullied by the opponent or the opponent’s coach.  On a day when the entire state was mesmerized by a meaningful game, the Terrapins delivered. That’s my take and I am sticking to it.

What helped fuel the fires of anger? Perhaps it was the following:

In May, new Penn State coach James Franklin drew the ire of Maryland coach Randy Edsall and fans of Terps football when he voiced his plans to consistently land the top recruits from the Maryland and Washington, D.C., area.

Franklin, a former Maryland assistant, said at the time that he considers Maryland “in-state.” He said the same about New Jersey. He went as far as to say: “I know there are other schools around here, but you might as well shut them down.”

Franklin later said he was just having fun by making that statement. Obviously no one in College Park understood the joke.

very happy the terps won in what is now a not so happy valley. md won despite another coaching blunder by edsall. how do you decline a holding penalty committed behind the line which would have created a 3rd and about 25. edsall declines and penn st kicks a field goal.
