On a rainy, foggy and chilly day, just dismal though 9,345 did show up, the Terps started off exactly the same way. Johnny Holiday and Chris Knoche both commented on the fact that maybe the weather and a possible hangover from the Virginia game was having an affect on the Terps early poor performance. So far this weekend has not been good for several rated and favorite teams, example, Yale 45 UConn 44, NJIT 72 # 17 Michigan 70, SCUpstae 59 Georgia Tech 54 and Green Bay 68 #15 Miami 55. Early on the Terps had 6 turnovers and 9 for the half and were being called for one charge after another, a good indication that they just were not in sync. The Terps trailed by as much as 9 points and finally took the lead with 9 minutes to go in the half 16 to 15. The Terrapins finished the half leading 34 to 29 thanks to hitting 5 of 13 threes and 8 of ten free throws.
The second half started somewhat like the first as the Terps hit a free throw only to see Winthrop hit consecutive threes and the scored was tied at 35 all. Layman hit a bucket and Pack followed with two buckets and we had a 6 point lead 41 to 35. Winthrop hit 2 free throws, Terps a free throw followed by a duece by Trimble off a nifty feed by Dodd and the Terps led 44 to 37. With 13:00 to go the Terps led 49 to 41 and with 12:00 to go it was 49 to 44 Terps. A trey by Wiley at the 9:25 mark and the lead was 52 to 44. A bucket by Winthrop and 2 from the charity stripe by Layman and it’s 54 to 46. A bucket by Pack and a three by Nickens and we led 59 to 46 the biggest lead of the night with 8:41 left. With 5:00 to go we led 68 to 55, with 3:54 left following a trey by Trimble it was 71 to 55 and with 1:17 to go it stood 75 to 62. FINAL 82 to 62. After a sluggish start the Terps had righted the ship and won handily. After committing 8 turnovers in the 1st half the Terps had only 2 the rest of the way, 28 minutes. Terps shot 9 for 22 from beyond the arc 41%, 3 by Nickens who continues to provide instant offense, 2 each by Layman and Pack who is finding his groove of late, I each for Trimble and Wiley. Free throws in recent year a real problem for the Terps we shot 29 for 35 a terrific 83%. Layman 11 for 14, Trimble 7 for 8, Dodd of all people 5 for 6, Pack 4 for 4, Nickens 1 for 2 and Wiley 1 for 1. Dodd had 10 rebounds, Layman had 6 and Trimble 5 along with 7 assists. Terps won the rebound battle 37 to 26. Layman had 21 points, Trimble 16 points, Pack 16 points, Nickens 12 points, Dodd 9 points, the best game of his young career along with his 10 rebounds and outstanding floor play, Wiley 6 points and Cheko 2 points. Early foul trouble limited Cheko’s floor time. Graham was scoreless but contributed 5 rebounds. All in all a very good win in spite of the slow start. Terps stand at 8 and 1 and in my opinion should stay in the top 25. We’ll see !!!
GO TERPS !!!
