Michigan State Head Coach Tom Izzo
Opening statement:
“Today, I think we saw a combination of two things. I thought it was a poor performance by the Michigan State team. I thought we were awful; we didn’t make layups, we didn’t guard. I thought this was one of the better performances by the Maryland team. They had Melo [Trimble] who pretty much made every shot he took. So I think it was a combination of the two. It was a good team we played, but when you miss layups and they took our two guards out of it and we took ourselves out of it, but very disappointed in how we take two steps forward and one step back. There were some bright spots for us. I think [Matt] Costello played pretty well and I thought Javon Bess competed better than anyone on our team. It was upsetting, but that’s what I saw.”
On how to not let the game slip away:
“My leaders have to play better. I mean, we really struggled on the free throw line. Like I said, we missed a lot of layups. Layups, I’m not talking about short jump shots. You’re not going to beat a good team when you do stuff like that. You miss a couple shots, then you miss a couple free throws, then the score goes from being down nine, then eleven and that’s the way it works. Give them credit, [Maryland] played harder and better and they had a couple of guys who had career nights. The way they shot the ball, not a lot of teams would have beat them here.”
On how good Maryland is:
“They are good. They can beat people a lot of ways. They have two things that aren’t common. They have an enormous amount of depth and they have enormous size. They’re good. They’re really good and when they shoot the way they did tonight then they’re great. They haven’t shot like that a lot, but I think they’re capable of doing it. They played harder, they got to the line more than us, and they made their free throws. We were pitiful, but they were really good so take nothing away from them.”
On Jake Layman:
“I thought [Jake] was aggressive. He ended up 11-12 from the free throw line so he did a good job with that. I didn’t think he was as aggressive the first game, but we had different lineups in the game so I think that hurt us. We were trying to guard him with smaller guys. When you get to the free throw line twelve times that means you’re doing something right.”
On Melo Trimble:
“I don’t know where anybody picked him because not many people knew much about him, but I have to say that he’s the straw that serves the drink. He gets other people involved. Once in a while, he’s almost causal out there and doesn’t really look to do much but get people involved. Then when it’s time to turn it on, I think that’s where his poise comes into play. He has an incredible ability to get to the free throw line and that helps him. Tonight he didn’t get there as much but that’s why he made all those threes.”
