The first few minutes in it looked like we may have a repeat first half like the 17 to 14 score up in Spartan land a couple weeks ago as both teams were missing shots and turning the ball over in their early possessions. Trimble broke the ice with a trey, Michigan State followed with a deuce and Nickens backed in and banked one off the backboard and the Terps were off to a 5 to 2 lead at the 16:00 mark.
A reverse layup, rebound and a bucket, another bucket and 2 free throws all by Michigan State and the Spartans had an 8 to 0 run and a 10 to 5 lead with 13:06 to go. Trimble had taken a couple treys early in the clock, missed both and got a seat on the bench which evidently had a HUGE effect on the rest of the game. With his back to the basket Wells hit Cheko with a beautiful over the shoulder pass for a slam, Layman a bucket, Layman a trey and Layman again a turn around one hander, a 9 to 0 run and a 14 to 10 lead Terps, 10:57 left. Bucket Spartans, 2 freebies Trimble, bucket Spartans, a drive and two Trimble, 18 to 14 Terrapins, 8:55 on the clock. Two treys Trimble and the Terps lead by 10, 24 to 14, 7:20 left and Trimble is on fire and the Terp run is 19 to 4. Bucket Spartans and another trey Trimble, who else, 27 to 16 Terps, 5:30 left. With 2:22 to go following 2 free throws by Layman the score is 33 to 24 Terps. Bucket Spartans, 2 free throws Layman and 2 freebies Pack and with 45 ticks left it’s 37 to 26 Turtles. Spartans miss with 19.7 left on the clock and the Terps hold for the last shot. Mr Trimble, Sir, hits a trey at the buzzer and Terps end the half with a 40 to 26 lead. Trimble with 21 points and Layman with 13 points have 34 of the Terps 40 first half points. Terps are 8 for 8 from the charity stripe and 5 for 10 from three point range. Trimble is 4 for 6 from long distance.
Nickens after a terrific kick out by Wells starts the second half with a Terp trey, 2 buckets Spartans, another Nickens three, ditto Spartans and it’s 46 to 33 Terps 16:30 to go. Bucket Sparties, bucket Terps, tip in Spartans and a bucket Wells, his first of the game which he follows with a three and the score is 53 to 37 Terps, their biggest lead, 13:40 to go. Terps are 9 for 15 from three point range !!! Michigan State nails a trey and Smotryz gets into the act with two drives down the lane for two scores and with 12:21 left Terps lead 57 to 40. Trimble nails yet another three and the Spartans miss 5 free throws in a row and the lead is 60 to 40 the largest of the night with 9:47 left. Spartans hit a bucket, miss another freebie now 6 in a row and the Terps make a free throw, with 7:03 left it’s 61 to 42 Terps. Spartans are 2 for 13 from three point range and 2 for 9 from the stripe !!! A three at the 4:30 mark and the score reads 63 to 47 Terrapins. Wells hits two freebies and Michigan State hits three buckets and Terps lead 65 to 53 with 1:57 left. Four straight freebies Layman, 2 freebies Spartans 69 to 55 Terps 1:37 to go. With 50 seconds left Layman nails a trey, Spartans turn the ball over and Izzo is screaming NO FOUL but they foul Layman and he makes both, Terps win 75 to 59. A great, great win before a huge crowd !!!
