Coming off its first Super Regional appearance in program history, the Maryland baseball team has been picked to win the Big Ten Conference by multiple outlets Tuesday.
Both D1Baseball.com and Perfect Game placed the Terps at the top of their respective Big Ten preseason standings. Maryland is entering its first season in the conference after earning an all-time best 40 victories last season.
D1Baseball.com has the Terps ranked No. 14 in its preseason national poll and picked sophomore hurler Mike Shawaryn as its preseason conference Pitcher of the Year. Perfect Game placed junior infielder Jose Cuas on its preseason All-Big Ten team.
Shawaryn set the program record for wins last year with 11 and notched an ERA of 3.12. Cuas played in 59 games last year, starting 56, and batted .279 with a team-high 42 RBIs and five home runs.
Maryland opens up its 2015 campaign in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Friday, Feb. 13 against Western Kentucky. The Terps begin their home slate with VCU on Tuesday, Feb. 24.
