Terps 68 Hoosiers 66—Melo and Yogi put on a Show

Random thoughts after The Terps moved to 20-5 and 8-4 in the conference:

Though he missed the final shots of the game–one to win and one to tie, Junior Yogi Ferrell was simply fantastic. 6-9 on treys. 23 points, 6 assists. His uptempo is 2 speeds quicker then uptempo. Coach Crean better enjoy his last few games at IU because I assure you he is gone after this season.

I have rarely had the confidence in a guard at Maryland the way I trust Melo with the ball. Greivis generated that feeling but not until his Junior year. His line–16 points, 6-12 from the field, 18 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists , and 2 turnovers in 36 minutes.

Coach Harbaugh was in the house tonight cheering for his brother in law who happens to be IU’s coach. Torrey Smith as usual was in attendance.

Jake bounced back strong, with 14 points along with 7 rebounds. Dez had 18 and played under better control.

To me the key part of the victory were the combined 4 treys from Smotrycz and Nickens.

Coach Crean on Maryland’s tough run lately

“It’s this league and everyone here in Maryland is learning that. This league is tremendous and this is not an anomaly. This is the way the league is all the time. It’s why the Big Ten gets the credit it deserves and sometimes doesn’t get enough credit because there is absolutely no team that you can look at and say ‘We’re going to feel better after this; we can just bring our B game’. You can’t, you have to bring it every night. There are great home environments, tremendous teams, a lot of great coaches in this league, and Mark has done a great job with that team. It’s hard to go on the road in any league; it’s extremely hard in this league. We had no doubt that they would play well. I think what happens in this league too is you know the percentages, you might game plan for it a

little bit with the free throws, but you don’t put too much on that, especially when they’re at home. There is a lot of risk and reward that goes into your game planning because you know that you make some mistakes. Most teams are going to have people that can make you pay. Maryland, to have 20 wins, with the offseason that Mark had, and to deal with that the way he did. To come into this season and get those guys better the way that he has. Mark is one of the best coaches in the country, and that’s not just because we played them tonight. I know him pretty well, and I have unreal respect for him. It is not easy to withstand and deal with adversity like that and he’s done it and they’re better because of it.”

More to say on the game tomorrow and on the Sports Maven on Saturday. Next up Penn State

a very entertaining game. better spacing and passing by terps. biggest play was mickens 3 late in the second half. good spacing and melo made the extra pass for the open shot.

md took advantage of some size mismatches including a nice play for layman called during a timeout.

best 2 players on the floor last night were yogi, who had a great look for a game winning 3 attempt and troy wiiliams. melo was a close third .

terps shot close to 50% including 10-23 from beyond the arc.

terps defense held together. the team came out with some much needed emotion and intensity which we haven’t seen in a while.

    rebounds were pretty even.

good win against a pretty good team.

I NEGLECTED TO MENTION RICHAUD PACK. DIDN’T SHOOT WELL. ON ONE PLAY, MISSED A 3, IND PUSHED THE BALL QUICKLY UPCOURT AND PACK HUSTLED BACK TO BACK A TERRIFIC BLOCK. PACK PLAYED A VERY GOOD FLOOR GAME. WAY TOO MANY TURNOVERS FROM WELLS AND LAYMAN. BUT TERPS HANG ON TO WIN A CLOSE ONE
