Frmer Maryland guard-forward Dez Wells will join the Oklahoma City Thunder for training camp, his agent told Comcast SportsNet. Wells, who was set to play for the Washington Wizards’ summer league before injuring his thumb, chose to try his luck with the Thunder over five other NBA teams.
“Wells signed what’s called a “make-good” training camp deal. If he makes the cut, a regular-season deal likely would be unguaranteed and involve him being sent to the D-League for long stretches to develop. The Thunder have a franchise called the Oklahoma City Blue ,” CSN’s J. Michael reported.
The primary question about Wells’ remains what position he can play in the league; he’s clearly an NBA-caliber athlete, but lacks point guard skills and measured 6-foot-3 at the Draft Combine— on the shorter for an NBA shooting guard.The Thunder have a star point guard in Russell Westbrook and drafted heralded Murray State point Cameron Payne in the first round, so Wells’ best chance will be to out-work the competition in a far-less impressive group of shooting guards: Dion Waiters, Andre Roberson and Anthony Morrow.
