Sophomore point guard Melo Trimble has been named the 2015-16 Preseason Big Ten Conference Player of the Year, the league announced Wednesday.
In addition, Trimble joined senior forward Jake Layman on the Preseason All-Big Ten Team.
Trimble, who is the first Terrapin to nab conference preseason player of the year honors since Terence Morris in 1999-00, was a First Team All-Big Ten pick as a freshman last season. Trimble started in all 35 games for the Terps, leading Maryland in scoring (16.2 ppg), assists (106) and steals (44). The Upper Marlboro, Md., product was also a Sporting News Second Team All-American and USBWA Freshman All-American. Trimble was one of four unanimous selections on the Preseason All-Big Ten Team.
Layman was named an All-Big Ten Third Team selection a year ago. The Wrentham, Mass., native boasted 29 double-figure scoring games a year ago while ranking in the top 25 in the conference in scoring (12.5 ppg), field goal percentage (.470) and rebounding (5.8 rpg). He scored his 1,000th point at Maryland last March and is 15 rebounds shy of 500 for his career.
