Chris Collins Quotes on the Game
Northwestern head coach Chris Collins
Opening Statement:
“That was certainly a tough loss for us. I was really proud of our guys’ effort tonight. I thought we
played a really good game. When you play Maryl
and, we’re not going to win a racehorse game
with them when they’ve got athlete on athlete and pro on pro. We had to try and manage the
possessions and make it a grind it out game, and I thought we did that. We had our
opportunities, but Maryland, give them credit,
they made some plays down the stretch. They
made some great passes on the pick and roll, especially in overtime. It was certainly our free
throw shooting. We went 5-for-12, which was a
factor. In a one possession game like that, they
were 16-for-19 from the line, we’re 5-for-12, so that was tough. You have to go out there and
make them. I thought it was a really good game.
I thought both teams played really hard. I’m
just disappointed for my guys because I thought we gave an effort that was rewarded with
winning, but we just didn’t get that tonight.”
On positives he can take away from the game:
“I’m not big on moral victories. But Aaron Falzon is a freshman, Dererk Pardon is a freshman,
Bryant McIntosh is a sophomore. These are great experiences for them. We wanted to win
these games this year. We played a great team
to overtime. I think that they are the most
talented team in the country. We’ve played a few of them and I’d be hard pressed to find
another team with equal talent. So for us to come into their home floor and battle the way we did
I’m proud of. But I’m a competitor and I want to win. If a win is out there to be had, you want to
try and make the plays to win, and that’s part of the process when you’re building a program.
We are trying to garner respect and these are the kind of games you want to be in and then
you’ve got to find a way to win them. We have done that this year, but tonight we weren’t able to
finish the game.
On the possessions at the end of regulation:
“It was really hard to score against them. I think they’re the tallest team in the country. When
you have three guys who are close to seven-f
ooters and then you have Jake Layman, who’s 6-
9, they have length and athleticism. They are hard to score against, I thought Melo (Trimble)
defended well. I thought he did a good job on Bryant (McIntosh). We ran a number of different
sets to try and get guys free and when we did we had a couple of missed free throws. I thought
Trey (Demps) had a good floater in the middle of the lane that he normally makes. From my
point of view, I thought it was Maryland’s defense that made it hard on us. So credit their
defense, and I thought we played pretty good defense and we battled tonight.”
On defending Melo Trimble:
“We played a little bit of a matchup zone. I thought they did a good job of getting into their pick
and roll game. He’s just a tough guy to guard bec
ause he’s got so many weapons. I think that
he’s passing really well. He presents so m
any problems when he gets around you, and he’s so
shifty. If you put too many guys on him, he’s goi
ng to hit Rasheed (Sulaimon), he’s going to hit
Jake (Layman), he’s going to hit Diamond (Stone), he’s going to Robert (Carter Jr.). He’s a
tough cover, especially with all the weapons he has now. We’re not going to shut him out, he’s
too good of a player. But the fact that it took him 18 shots to get 18 points is good. I also thought
we kept him off the foul line. A lot of times when Melo is at his best, he’s really getting to the line
10-12 times. I thought our guys fought, but give him credit. I thought in overtime he made some
big time passes. He hit Diamond for that three point play which was huge, and maybe Carter
one time. Thought he made two great passes in overtime when both teams were struggling to
score.”
