Michigan State’s Bigs Dominate Terps in 74-65 Victory

Simply put it would have taken a huge Terp performance to beat Sparty at home last night. Why? Because Maryland was facing a desperate team that had lost 2 straight at home. Losing last night would have crippled the Spartans chances.

I’m not sure which was was worse—allowing so many offensive bounds or just playing so bad offensively on the road again. When you live by the 3 you can die by the the 3 and that’s what happened last night.

Too much reliance on Melo scoring the ball always seems to happen on the road. Layman 7 points—really? Melo and Rasheed led the Terps in rebounding with 7 apiece.

It’s Judgment Day for Maryland next Thurs vs Iowa

izzo out coached turgeon. state outhustled md. state shared the ball better, played harder and made their free throws down the stretch.

10 minutes into the game i called bruce saying the terps had to run their offense through stone. bilas mentioned the same thing at half time. stone took 3 shots the entire game. absurd for any game with a guy this talented on offense….completely absurd when the team couldn’t hit lake michigan from the shoreline last night.

state outrebounded md by 10. state had 17 assists 8 turnovers. md 11 assists 9 turnovers. state played more physical.

md has better talent but you need to do the little things to win, especially on the road. you can’t play hard part of the game. you need to go out and play 40 minutes.

nice to see checko come in and play pretty well. terps still need better help from the bench. one of the jobs of the coaching staff is to develop the bench. another is to make good in game adjustments. they need to do better.

the iowa game is a big game but it isn’t judgement day. the goal is to make the tournament and go deep into the dance.

I’ll agree with caveats on some points, Freddy. “State played harder.” Agree, but…

MSU played with the desperation of a talented a team coming off a three game losing streak fueled by the energy of their home crowd. Oh, wait, they were.

“State shared the ball better.” Agree, but…

That was to be expected. MSU entered the game #4 in the country in assist to turnover ratio at 1.67 to 1 so they were a little better than their average. They were #2 in the country with 20.1 assists/game so they were a bit under their average. Maryland is #106 at 14.6 per game.

Part of this comes from MSU having a senior point guard while Maryland has a sophomore playing at that position and still learning it, truth be told.

State out rebounded MD by 10. True but they had a +12.2 average rebound margin coming into the game. So pretty much to be expected.

todd i don’t care what the stats say. you go out and out work the other team. you play smart basketball. you figure out a way to beat the other team.

Is was the same old song when the Terps play a good team on the road. That is: (1) Do not play well in the first half and results that the team is behind at halftime, (2) Are out hustled by the other team, (3) Are out rebounded by the other team, (4) Have less assists & more turnovers than the other team. All this, with the exception of North Carolina, the Terps have more talent.
