Terps Rebound 12-8 Over Drexel to End 2 Game Skid

Junior Colin Heacock scored four second half goals and junior Matt Rambo added a hat trick of his own to power the No. 11 Maryland men’s lacrosse team to a 12-8 victory over Drexel Tuesday night.

The Terps remained undefeated in a short history against Drexel, moving to 3-0. Senior Kyle Bernlohr had nine saves in net, while Isaiah Davis-Allen and Austin Henningsen each picked up five ground balls.

Maryland scored a pair of goals less than five minutes into the game, as Tim Rotanz and Rambo beat the Drexel goalkeeper. It was Rotanz’ first goal since April of 2014, while Rambo’s goal marked the 75th of his career. Drexel cut the lead in half with a score of its own, before senior Pat Young scored his first career goal in a Maryland uniform to give Maryland a 3-1 lead. Rambo added his second of the game shortly after to extend the Terps’ lead to three goals.

The Terps came out of the halftime break with a goal by the junior Heacock, who picked up a loose ball in front of cage and beat the Drexel goaltender. Young took matters into his own hands to quell a two-goal Drexel run, before Rambo connected for his first hat trick of the season to Maryland ahead by two, 7-5. Rotanz then added his second of the game to help the Terps close the third quarter on a 3-0 run. After Drexel opened the fourth quarter with a goal, Dylan Maltz found Heacock with a beautiful pass inside to put the Terps ahead 9-6. Connor Kelly and Heacock added two more goals after a Drexel strike to give Maryland its largest lead of the game, 11-7. Heacock added an insurance goal with 1:38 to play for his career-high fourth of the game.

Drexel’s not a top level squad but this is an acceptable bounce back after playing Notre Dame on Saturday and traveling back across the country to play again on Tuesday.
