Recruiting Spiking High for DJ Durkin as 4 Star Cam Spence Verbals to Maryland

Four-star defensive tackle Cam Spence announced his verbal commitment to Maryland on Friday morning during a broadcast on Periscope.

Spence, who is a rising senior at IMG Academy (Fla.) and a transfer from Gilman, picked Maryland over a top 10 power such as Alabama, Ohio State, Texas and Southern California.

Spence is a consensus four-star recruit among the four major recruiting services. In the 247sports.com composite rankings, he’s the No. 12 defensive tackle and the No. 190 player in the nation.

Spence is the first domino in what could be a major recruiting weekend for coach DJ Durkin and the Terps. Four-star St. John’s (D.C.) quarterback Kasim Hill, another Gilman transfer, and three-star Good Counsel linebacker Ayinde Eley are scheduled to make their verbal commitments on Saturday afternoon, and there’s a good chance that one or both could pick the Terps.

Apropos of not much beyond keeping Terps fans in the loop regarding what’s happening in CP, Maryland baseball pulled a doubleheader sweep of Ohio State Friday. Szefc decided to move Shawaryn to Sunday (at least for this series). He got a gem of a game from Taylor Bloom in the opener. Bloom tossed a 3 hit complete game shutout on just 90 pitches and freshman Marty Costes whacked his seventh home run of the season in a speedy 3-0 Terps win that finished in 1:42.

The second game was truly wild. Brian Shaffer tossed seven strong innings but Buckeyes starter John Havird was even better. Ohio State scratched out a run in the top of the seventh on a HBP, stolen base, single and sac fly and carried the 1-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth with Havird working on a no-hitter.

Madison Nickens led off the ninth and Havird hit him with a pitch. and aOSU coach Greg Beals opted to pull Havird despite the no-no still being in play. After a fly out and a ground out that moved Nickens to second, Nick Cieri struck out on a 3-2 pitch that skittered away from the catcher and Cieri reached on the wild pitch while Nickens advanced to third. Kevin Biondic hit a bouncer to third and the first baseman failed to handle a tough throw. Nickens scored and the game went to the 10th tied at one with Maryland still hitless.

Ohio State put runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the tenth but Mike Rescigno got the Terps out of the inning. Zack Jankarski singled to center with one out in the bottom half of the inning for Maryland’s first hit. After a strikeout, Jankarski stole second and scored when Nickens lined a single to right center on a 1-2 pitch to give the Terps the walk-off win.

No game today. The series finale is scheduled for Sunday at 1:00 pm.
