#1 Terps Roll Past Quinnipiac 13-6 –To Face Cuse Next Saturday ar Noon

The No. 1 Maryland men’s lacrosse team defeated Quinnipiac, 13-6, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday afternoon at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium.

With the win, the Terps (15-2) advance to the quarterfinals where they will face the winner of Albany and No. 8 Syracuse next Saturday in Providence, R.I., on the campus of Brown University.

The Terrapins 14th consecutive win improved their all-time record in the first round to 17-4. Maryland picked up its 12th NCAA win since head coach John Tillman took over the program in 2011, tied for the most during that span with Duke.

The win was powered by the Terps’ play at the faceoff X, including a 14-of-17 performance from freshman specialist Austin Henningsen, and a balanced scoring attack led by hat tricks from senior midfielders Bryan Cole and Henry West and junior attackman Matt Rambo.

It was the Bobcats (12-4) who opened up the scoring in the first quarter, but the Terps responded with a three-goal run with scores from Cole, Rambo and sophomore defenseman Bryce Young, who buried his second goal in three games

The Maryland offense would catch fire as they rattled off a five-goal run in the third quarter to take a commanding 12-4 lead into the final quarter.

The Terrapins put an exclamation mark on the frame as Matt Dunn scooped up a Tim Muller caused turnover to initiate a fast break. Dunn found freshman attackman Louis Dubick at the point who quickly moved the rock to line-mate Colin Heacock. Heacock made one more pass cross-crease to Rambo, who finished the tic-tac-toe passing as time expired in the third.

The Maryland defense never allowed Quinnipiac to find an offensive rhythm led by three caused turnovers by Muller while senior goalie Kyle Bernlohr added seven saves.
