McDonogh School wins 8th straight IAAM title, caps 7th consecutive undefeated season—from Tom Peace

SEVERN, Md. – This time, there were no late comebacks or close calls for the McDonogh School girls’ lacrosse team.

After winning the last five Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM) titles in close and mostly nailbiting fashion, the No. 1 Eagles dominated Roland Park from the start today and claimed a 15-7 victory for their eighth straight “A” conference championship at Archbishop Spalding.

McDonogh closes at 22-0 and will surely be the No. 1 team in every national poll for the seventh straight year – all perfect seasons. The Eagles have won 155 straight games in what is becoming one of the amazing high school streaks and stories in any sport.

Roland Park (14-4) had given the Eagles major challenges the past two years in the league final, bowing, 15-14, in last year’s final and 16-13 the year before. In each game the Reds had a strong chance to win.

But this time, McDonogh bolted to a 7-1 lead and never let up.

Some have suggested that this McDonogh team is the best – or at least the most dominant. Considering the amazing talent the program has produced, can that be true?

This year’s McDonogh team had one scare – a 12-11 overtime win over Century 13 days ago. In that game the Eagles had to make a big comeback to force overtime. Otherwise, the Eagles were never challenged.

“You know our history of close games in the championship; we usually had one-goal games,” said junior Andie Aldave, who had three goals and two assists. “We wanted to make a statement that we could go down as the best team in McDonogh history and I think we showed that today.

“The senior class was incredible. Our captains were unbelievable. They took charge and that showed on the scoreboard.”

Brindi Griffin led McDonogh with four goals and Julia Dorsey had three goals and an assist while Catie May scored three.

Aldave said her team always must deal with the pressures of the streak and the weight of past Eagles teams and their success.

McDonogh outscored its three playoff foes by 53-19. Its 15-4 win over Notre Dame Prep in the semifinals was noteworthy because NDP had won seven straight games, including a win over DC power Bishop Ireton.

“This season we got slapped in the face every game,” Aldave said. “Every team had us circled on their calendar. We have to get up for every game.

“When we played Century, we realized that everyone was taking their best punch at us. That Century game pushed us and gave us an advantage. We figured if we can pull that out let’s just blow0 everyone away. That really showed today.”
