At about 5:30 Sunday afternoon as the Maryland Terrapins and Michigan Wolverines men’s soccer teams were battling through a chilly rain in a one all tie at Ludwig Field the news that Indiana and Michigan State had played to a one all tie meant the planets had fallen into line and a Terps win would cap a perfect Maryland weekend.
The weekend began on Friday night when Maryland’s volleyball team ended a three game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Indiana Hoosiers. On Saturday, the football team repeated that feat ending their three game losing streak with a thrilling come from behind 42-39 win also over Indiana.
The good juju continued into Sunday as the Terps’ field hockey squad, behind a pair of early goals from senior Lein Holsboer and freshman Brooke DeBerdine, notched their seventh straight win beating the Michigan State Spartans 3-0 to advance to the semifinals of the B1G Tournament next Friday afternoon in East Lansing where they’ll face sixth ranked Penn State.
Meanwhile in the Xfinity Center Pavilion, the volleyball team rallied from an 11-7 fifth set deficit to knock off the 17th ranked Purdue Boilermakers in an electrifying 3-2 win in front of 1,004 raucous fans. The win is the young Terrapins’ second over a top 20 squad this season and improves Maryland’s record to 16-8 overall and 5-7 in conference. The win assures Maryland of at least a .500 finish for the first time under head coach Steve Aird.
Back at Ludwig Field, a second goal for the soccer team would mean an end to their three game losing skid and would have given Maryland the outright Big Ten title which would have been the Terrapins’ fourth in as many seasons. Even a tie would have seen Maryland share the crown with Indiana and Michigan State. Instead, it was the Michigan Wolverines who would break though in the fifth minute of the second overtime to not only send the Terps to their fourth straight loss – all at home – but, with the 2-1 win, lay their claim to the conference title.
Maryland will host fifth seeded Wisconsin on Saturday or Sunday in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals with the winner advancing to the semifinals at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana. The Terps beat the Badgers 5-4 in monsoon like conditions in Madison in their regular season match up.
