B1G Day in Columbus for Terps on Sunday

2/23/2020

By Zachary Wilson

Maryland heads to Columbus in what will be a crucial game for the program. Let’s go over some of the things that are currently at stake based on the result of today’s match.

  1. A Stronghold of the Number 1 Spot in the Big Ten

Following a surprising loss against Illinois, Penn State have now lost two in a row after their meteoric 8 game win streak to press the lead for Big Ten dominance. With a win tonight, UMD would take a 3 game lead of the conference and take their in conference record to 13-3. A win here would only leave them one more win away from full security of that top slot in the Big Ten, but a guaranteed double bye in the Big Ten Tournament.

  1. A Strong Case For Top 5 in the AP Polls

Currently, the Terps are in the #7 position amidst all other programs in the nation, but in a week of utter chaos, they could see a rise to top 5 with a win tonight. Specifically, the previously undefeated San Diego State Aztecs suffered an ugly loss at home against a mediocre UNLV team. In addition to the Aztecs, Baylor (ranked #1 for a majority of the season) also lost, to a very strong Kansas team at home. To round off the list, the kings of the west coast, the touted Gonzaga Bulldogs, also saw a blowout loss of their own on the road at BYU. With all this in mind, If UMD showed out and overpowered this Ohio State opponent, they would have a very strong case to return to the Top.

  • Another Strong Win to Add to Their Résumé

For a team that has shown considerable struggles with consistency prior to this incredible 9 game win streak, another strong win would really mean a lot to this program’s overall appearance. Advancing with a win tonight keeps the ball in Maryland’s court and proves defiantly that they are capable of making a deep tournament run despite the various doubters.
