The eighth-ranked Maryland women’s basketball team was edged out by Washington State, 70-64, Saturday as the Terps’ late rally fell short in the final minutes in the match in the San Juan Shootout.
Sophomore Brionna Jones led the Terrapins (6-1) with a career-high 23 points. Laurin Mincy added 13 points, including 11 in the second half, with a team-high five assists.
Lia Galdiera scored 33 points to tie her career-high for the Cougars (5-2).

Prior to the game there was good news and bad news, the good news was that Evan Smotryz is back and the bad that Dez Wells will be out about four weeks with a broken bone in his wrist. He supposedly broke it at about the 18 minute mark of the previous game which probably explains his sorry 5 for 20 shooting in the Iowa State game. Melo saved the day last night as he finished with 24 points including 13-14 free throws, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and ONLY 1 TURNOVER in 31 minutes.
Dez as expected was sorely missed. Dez is always good for a few scoring spurts every game. They were missed last night.
Evan Smotrycz returned to the lineup last night and though very rusty (only 3 points) he still led the team with 6 rebounds.
