The Terps’ men’s basketball staff was out in full force for the opening of the Reebok Challenge Breakout last week in Philadelphia, with head coach Mark Turgeon leading a group that also included assistants Scott Spinelli and Dalonte Hill to see this top local priority big-man during the first days.

Riverdale Baptist 2014 center Chinanu Onuaku continues to get much Terps’ attention, and he and Trayvon Reed of Georgia appear to be two of the most realistic bets as UMD looks to add the final piece — a “5” man that can protect the rim — to their top-five recruit class.
The ‘3-star’ Onuaku, who says he’s close to 6-feet-11 now (which he was listed as in the Reebok roster), had UMD commits Melo Trimble and Jared Nickens in his ear during the week in Philly, trying to sell him on being the fourth and likely final member of the 2014 class. The Terps other commit, shooting guard Dion Wiley, was in Georgia for the week, but he and Onuaku had been texting as well.
And Onuaku said he’s hearing the message loud and clear. He made it out to Maryland last month to watch the NBA Draft with the current players.
“Melo is….he’s just saying come to Maryland and we can win championships. And I like it,” Onuaku said in Philly.
