Turgeon Praises Defense in Sloppy 66-50 Win over Fordham

Just a few thoughts:

Yes the defense played well, but conversely the offense had trouble with the Zone. Melo, Nickens, Dion, and Pack shot a combined 10-30. To Turgeon’s credit, he made some solid adjustments at halftime as the Terps played a much better 2nd half. But expect to see Herb Sendek (Arizona State) play lots of zone on Monday.

Another strong energy game for Jake Layman. He was 5-6 from the field and scored 12.

Cekovsky and Dodd were somewhat dominated by the opposing center.

Jared Nickens came off the bench and put some life into the offense, as he finished with a game high 13 points.

Melo was a bit tight early on but settled down in the 2nd half.

 Coach Turgeon’s Post game Remarks

“I thought we were terrific defensively tonight. We guarded a lot and did not really finish the game the way I wanted to defensively, but up until about the five-minute mark I thought we were tremendous. We really had not practiced switching screens very much, but we did it in the game tonight and it really helped us. I thought we did a good job controlling their penetration for the most part. I thought we got into a much better flow offensively in the second half and we shot a better percentage (52%). We executed at a much higher level in the second half and were also able to make our free throws. It was not as pretty as you would like it any other night, but it was a good win. I thought Fordham played really well and they had to slow it down a lot because they had a guy out. We prepared for a totally different team than what we played against.”
