Terps Rally to Defeat Hoyas 75-71 Behind Late Game Heroics From Melo

It’s 210 AM so this will be brief:

What an incredible game!!! The Terps overcame a dominant inside edge from the Hoyas and rallied playing small ball to win.

Maryland got an edge from the supernatural with an appearance from Grievis with 5 minutes left.  Vasquez who had just completed a NBA game atVerizon, rushed to Comcast in time to see a typical Turgeon like late game charge.

Stat highlights:

Melo —24 pts 13-18 from the foul line, 3 treys–one to tie the game at 61—Grade B because of slow start

Jake — 15 pts, 5 rebounds 2 assists, and 1 steal—Grade B because of slow start

Rasheed—10 pts, 7 assists, Great defense and his usual ferocity—Grade B+

Robert Carter Jr—12 pts , 8 rebounds—B+ for carrying the team in the 1st half

Ceko Dodd, and Diamond—outrebounded 36-28–should never happen at home—must get tougher

Rasheed Sulaimon hit a 3-pointer with 1:18 left to break a tie, and No. 3 Maryland got 24 points from Melo Trimble in a rousing 75-71 victory over neighborhood rival Georgetown on Tuesday night.

Maryland (2-0) was stretched to the finish against Georgetown, which led by seven in the second half before wilting. The Hoyas looked much sharper than in their season-opening, double-overtime loss to Radford but fell to 0-2 for the first time since the 1998-99 season.

With the score tied at 68, Sulaimon made his only basket of the second half to put the Terrapins ahead to stay. Two free throws by Trimble upped the margin to five points with 12 seconds left, assuring Maryland a victory.

Bradley Hayes had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Hoyas, and D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera scored 14.

Jake Layman scored 15 for the Terrapins and Robert Carter added 12.

very enjoyable game to watch. great intensity in the second half.

md was tight early but the shots started falling in the second half, scoring on their last 9 possessions. team is a work in progress….only game 2….melo is a terrific scorer but as we move along he has to distribute ball more willingly to make others around him better. his best play last night was a dribble drive into the lane where the defense converged on him and he made a nice bounce pass to layman for the dunk.

sulaimon is the best player on the team. above average d, shooting, passing and court sense.

the big men need to watch film of buck williams. they have to play with an edge. i honestly don’t think the bigs get good coaching, len didn’t improve much and shaq cleare didn’t improve even a little bit. they should be utilized more in the half court offense, particularly carter. stone will be fine offensively. he needs to get used to the speed of the game and playing against big guys with skills. checko is going to be good. he is still learning but these guys need better coaching.

when he’s cold like he was early in the game layman needs to drive to the basket. he sat on the 3 pt line too much early after missing several shots.

again a team that is still getting used to each other. the nice thing is they can close teams out late when the score is close.

this team can be special. need better chemistry, melo to be more of a distributor and play more aggressively on defense and on the boards. it will be interesting to see where they are a month from now.

Without the play of Checko & Sulaimon in the first half the Terps get blown out. Checko & Sulaimon were steady in the second half. Checko should start the next game. Carter was steady through out but has the tools to be better. Melo & Layman played very good in the second half but need to play the entire game. Diamond will be entirely different in a couple weeks as he caches up with the speed of the game. Very good game to watch as it was very exciting. Can not believe Georgetown lost to Radford as they are a very good team.
