the 6 pm starting time is because of tv. the majority of college games televised start at 7 so btn hopes to pick up viewers eager to watch the games. that said there are a couple of games on today between 6 and 630 one on fox and i’m not sure what other network and tomorrow there is a game on espn news that starts at 5.
tv isn’t interested in whether fans can get to the game easily. matter of fact i think they would rather people watch on tv and watch the commercials
if the athletic department had the fans best interest at heart they would tell tv we can’t play at a particular time but the athletic department isn’t that concerned about the fans. they are more concerned about the check from tv.
Turgeon is also on record as preferring early games so fans are 3rd in line when it comes to accommodating folks.
I’d love to get back to the 9:00 PM starts but those seem to gone with the move to the Big 10. I have to leave by 5:30 to make it to my seats (with food) by tip off especially with the new security requirements implemented after the Paris attacks. For a 9:00 game I’d leave at at 8:20 and make it comfortably.
20 yrs ago bobby knight was heard on tv several times complaining about start times. he couldn’t stand 9 pm starts because the kids wouldn’t get to to sleep until after 1 if it was a home game and most would miss classes the following day if they were on the road….. so bitching about tv’s control of the schedule goes back a long time
