Maryland vs. Bucknell: Stars and Under the Pars

This post game column is to determine who starred, and who played under par, each players receives a rating of up to three plus (+++) or three negative (—) by Jordan Viener

I’m not overly surprised about this one. I knew that Bucknell was a good team, they’ve won the last six Patriot League regular season titles. They also made nearly every shot they attempted in the first half, the game turned in the 2nd, but to quote our BTN broadcasters “It’s a lot easier when the shots go in.”

Stars:

Bruno Fernando (+++):Bruno Fernando’s first start was a good one. He brought the energy and passion that he had versus Butler for starters level minutes, there was a notable drop off every time he left the court and he has quickly become one of the most important players on the squad.

Darryl Morsell (+++): Another freshman making an enormous impact early in the season. Darryl Morsell was the team’s leading scorer in the 2nd half with 12, and kept the team alive at several key moments. Morsell has proved that he is so much more than Jaylen Smith’s teammate.

Kevin Huerter (++): Kevin Huerter was the offense in the first half. His indispensability in this game is reflected, spending 38 minutes on the court. The issues came from turnovers, of which Huerter had 5. This is the 2nd game in row where he had led the team in TO’s, if this continues we may need to really worry.

Anthony Cowan (+): Anthony Cowan has finally come down from his godlike streak to start the season. Today Ant went 2/7 from the floor but still led the team in scoring with 17. His scoring came from the free throw line (12/13). The highlight of the day today was his deep three to pull the team within 5 in the middle of the second.

Dion Wiley (+): Dion Wiley had another perfectly fine game. He doesn’t really impact the game himself, but I maintain he is a calming, veteran presence on a very young team. He also plays some very solid defense.

Under the Pars:

Michel Chkovsky (-): More or less a non impact performance only playing two mintues.

Sean Obi (-): Sean Obi re-appears after his one game disappearance versus Butler, but only for 5 minutes. Still, he contributed 2 points, but had two turnovers in his short appearance. He overall looked a little lost out there.

Justin Jackson (-): JJ struggled from the field mightily in this one (3/11). We know good he can be, but he hasn’t shown it yet this season. He had however shown his rebounding skills, he is currently leading the team in rebounds and is averaging 10.3 rebounds per game. Hopefully the scoring part of his game comes along.

Ivan Bender (–): Ivan Bender had played in 31 minutes this season, and scored 6 points and gotten 9 rebounds. This trend continued today (2 points, 3 rebounds, 11 minutes). He simply isn’t an impactful player and lacks enough mobility to be a defensive stopper.

Jared Nickens (–): Jared Nickens played 4 minutes and his only stat was a foul.

Season Ratings:

Team: +6

Daryll Morsell: +5

Anthony Cowan Jr.: +4
