Former Maryland guard Kevin Huerter was selected in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft Thursday evening by the Atlanta Hawks. Huerter was drafted 19th overall by the Hawks to become the 19th first round draft choice in program history.

Huerter becomes the 58th Terrapin all-time to drafted, and the fourth player selected in the NBA Draft at Maryland under Head Coach Mark Turgeon.

“Atlanta is a great fit for Kevin,” said Turgeon. “I’m so happy I had the opportunity to spend the night in Albany with Kevin, his family and some of our team. The Hawks are getting a great player, person and an even better teammate. I’m so excited for this next step in Kevin’s life and can’t wait to follow his career.”

Huerter was named an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection after compiling one of the top three-point shooting seasons in Maryland history as a sophomore. Huerter’s 41.7% three-point field goal percentage ranked ninth in the Big Ten this season, while his 14.8 points per game were second on the team and 16th in the conference. Huerter’s 73 threes are tied for the fifth-most ever in a season by a Terrapin.

The Clifton Park, N.Y. native had a breakout season as a freshman for the Terps, starting in all 33 games while averaging 9.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. Huerter helped Maryland advance to its third consecutive NCAA Tournament during the 2016-17 season.

Huerter averaged 12.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 assist per game in his career, and is ranked 12th all-time in career threes at Maryland (138).
