Terps Upset #7 Denver 1-0 on Goal from Paul Bin

from umterps.com

Paul Bin scored in his second-consecutive match as the Maryland men’s soccer team (5-5-3, 2-3 B1G) knocked off No. 7 Denver (10-2-2, 2-0-1 Summit), 1-0, on Tuesday night.

Bin’s fifth minute goal proved to be the difference in the match, as the Maryland defense held Denver to just seven shots on the evening.

“This was a great win for our program,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “It was a fantastic effort. We came out on the front foot and scored a great first goal. Then it was a great defensive effort the rest of the night. Denver was off since last Monday, so we knew they were going to bring a lot of energy and quality. We needed to be at our best on the defensive side of the ball. I thought it was a full 90 minutes of a great team effort. Our guys showed great physical and mental toughness tonight.”

Bin’s early goal game on a ball played in by defender Chase Gasper, who swung it into the box on a free kick. It was the junior’s team-best third tally of the season. Gasper’s assist was his second helper of the year.

The Terrapins kept the pressure on in the entire first half, generating multiple scoring opportunities. The closest came in the 27th minute, when Brett St. Martin’s header soared just over the crossbar to keep the score at 1-0.

Denver came out strong to begin the second half, but Maryland’s backline remained strong throughout the final 45 minutes of play. Led by the strong play of center backs Donovan Pines and Johannes Bergman, Maryland kept the Pioneers off the board to earn its second ranked victory of the season.

The night saw another quality performance from goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair, who posted his sixth shutout of the season. The redshirt junior has now allowed just 11 goals through Maryland’s 13 matches.

The Terps will now welcome Ohio State to College Park on Friday night, with the match scheduled to begin at 7PM
