O’s Continue Mastery Over NL East – Defeat Philly on Roberts 2 Run Homer

This is a time to praise Dave Trembley. He is beginning to push the right buttons. The O’s staged a gallant 9th inning comeback to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies last night 6-5 as Brian Roberts smacked a 2 run dinger with 2 out in the 9th. Sherrill closed out the game for his 14th save.

I come to bury Trembely, not praise him. Hey, I’m happy the O’s won. And how many posts have a little Shakespear in them? That’s Shakespear the writer, not Shakespear the guy who played wide-out for Miami Hurricanes sport fans. Yes the O’s showed some of the old Orioles magic but Trembley’s overmanaging and lack of flexibility hurt the team last night. Trembley tells his bench players a couple days in advance when they are going to play. He does this regardless of how the starters are playing. Last night the O’s faced a lefthander yet Trembley started Luke Scott over Nolan Reimold who had 2 hits including a home run the night before. Yes Scott has played really well this year but he came into the game 2 for his last 11. Amd, if you remember from last year when goes into a slump, it’s ususally a bad slump. Scott strikes out with the bases loaded, strikes out with runners on first and third and in the bottom of the 7th there are two fly balls hit to left both falling out of Scott’s reach for doubles. The first ball was definetly catchable by an outfielder with better speed than Scott, the 2nd would have been a much harder play, but could have been caught had Reimold been playing or had Trembley brought in Pie as a defensive replacement with the O’s leading 3-0. In a similar situation involving Trembley starting bench players a few games ago, Jim Palmer mentioned that Hall of Fame manager Earl Weaver would have started a regular who was hitting well over the bench player even if he had told the bench player he was going to start. Look for some quotes from the Canterbury Tales in my next entry.
