University of Maryland rising sophomore Lauren Varnas is one of 955 players competing at the 2009 U.S. Women’s Amateur, which will be contested at Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis beginning on Monday.Varnas, who recorded one top-10 finish as a freshman in 2008-09, competed in the sectional qualifier in Colts Neck, N.J., on July 15. The Chatham, N.J., native shot a 77 in qualifying, which allowed her to become an alternate for the U.S. Amateur. Varnas’ number was called and she, along with four others from the New Jersey qualifier, is competing in St. Louis this week.The U.S. Women’s Amateur is conducted with 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying. The low 64 scorers then advance to match play, with the champion determined by a 36-hole match-play final.
