Comeback Falls Short as #4 Terps Fall to UVA 11-10 Before 7,639 at College Park—Audio from Cottle, Starsia, Phipps and Yeatman

In a heartbreaking game, a furious rally by the Terrapins fell agonizingly short as #1 UVA remained undefeated at 9-0. The Cavaliers jumped on a flat Maryland squad with an opening period barrage of 6 goals.Coach Cottle said it took the Terps the entire 1st half to get adjusted to the speed of the Wahoos. Though thoroughly disappointed with the goal controversy, Coach was clearly happy withe the grit and ferocity of the comeback. AUDIO Cottle UVA

Will Yeatman, seized control of the offense as the Terps trailed early by 6-0, then 7-1. Maryland’s future tight end scored 4 times and gathered 1 assist. Post Game audio Will Yeatman

Brian Phipps singlehandedly kept the Terps in the game early on, making save after save as UVA kept up early pressure.  Incredibly, he wound up with 16 saves on the day. Audio Phipps post UVA

The Terps seem to be snakebit.  umterps.com reported :  “With just a little more than two minutes remaining Virginia goalie Adam Ghitelman stopped a shot by junior Grant Catalino, but the rebound bounced in front of the crease where junior All-American Ryan Young swatted the loose ball into the Cavalier goal. But the goal was waived off when an official whistled Young for being in the crease, disallowing the goal. However, the controversy came after television replays clearly showed that Young was not in the crease when the goal was scored.”  More as the controversy unfolds. Last year a winning goal by the Terps was waived off because someone from the Virginia sideline called a timeout. I will analyze the video tape replay over the next few days and comment on the call of the officials.. But remember this could be the first of perhaps 3 matches with UVA this year.

Virginia Coach Dom Starsia  commented post game about the fierce battles UVA and the Terps have had the past few years. Starsia

Steele Stanwick led the way for UVA with 4 goals and an assist.

the video replays on espnu clearly were inconclusive. both announcers stated several times that the official made the right call. i couldn’t tell from the couple of angles they showed if it was or wasn’t a goal. another great comeback by a terps team to only fall short in the end. 7800 seems like a pretty small crowd for a game with the number 1 and 4 teams playing. seems like the lacrosse g-ds are with uva.
