#4 Terrapins Defeat Rival Hopkins at M&T 10-9 Before 21,000 as Travis Reed, Bryn Holmes, Ryan Young, and Brian Farrell Lead the Way

Last Saturday Bryn Holmes told me this game was the most important of the year — that he had to beat Hopkins at least once in his career. Move on to the end of the game–the very last face off with the Terps up 10-9. Bryn wins the faceoff and proceeds to run the clock off 45 seconds until he out of breath and just about secures the victory. That is what it took to win the rivalry game. Holmes Audio Hopkins

The Terps spotted the Bluejays a 4-1 lead but Coach Cottle was undaunted on the sidelines. A key moment of the game was when Hopkins up 4-3 had a 2 man advantage at the end of the half but failed to score. Hopkins was 1-7 man up and Maryland was 4-4. Coach Pietramala commented after the game. Pietramala audio

Yeatman returned to the lineup tonight and though a little rusty contributed 3 great plays including a goal for the ages when he he shook off 2 defenders hanging on him. Travis Reed grabbed the MVP award for the game with his 2 goals and 1 assist to Joe Cummings.

Game in game out Ryan Young controls the tempo for the Terps. Certainly when the ball is in his stick good things always seem to follow. The 3rd part of the starting attack, Grant Catalinohad 2 goals and 1 assist.

Senior goalie Brian Phipps turned in a clutch 4th quarter performance making 2 key saves that saved the victory.

In the press room when Sean Burns from Inside Lacrosse asked for MVP votes, it nearly unanimous for Travis Reed except for myself. Brian Farrell was stupendous last night. When he is on the field he is everywhere. He is tough, physical, great in transition, provides many of the clears for the team and has developed a 6th sense with Goalie Phipps. Farrell could be the kid that returns Maryland to the promised land!!!

Coach Cottle was ecstatic in the post game press conference and certainly gave props to Hopkins for their valiant comeback. Cottle Post Hopkins Audio The task continues to be tough as now the Acc Tournament comes to College Park and the Terps face the Tar Heels Friday night at 7:30.

Stephen Boyle and Michael Kimmel led a furious comeback for Hopkins that just fell short. Hopkins is now 5-6 and certainly has to win at least 2 out of their last 3. This would leave them at 7-7 but with the quality of their schedule , it should get them into the tourney.
