A Broadcasting Legend Passes Away—Ernie Harwell Dead at 92

Many of my readers probably don’t know that Ernie Harwell was once the O’s Play-by-play man in the late 50’s. I believe in 1959 my dad sold Ernie a car (a Rambler I think) and knowing what a baseball fan I was–introduced me to the legend. Over the next season I got to sit in the broadcast booth with Ernie and struck up a friendship with his son. A night that I will never forget was when Ernie allowed me to sit in on a crab feast with his family and and several Yankees after a Oriole Yankee game. As I was only 10 years old my recollections are slim but I clearly remember talking to the Scooter and Whitey Ford.  Ernie was a tremendous guy and an incredible announcer.

I’M PRETTY SURE WHEN ERNIE DID THE ORIOLES GAMES HE WAS PARTNERED WITH ANOTHER HALL OF FAME BROADCASTER HERB CARNEIL WHO WENT TO MINN IN 1962 TO DO THE TWINS GAMES UNTIL 2006.
