6’10” JUCO Berend Weijs Becomes 6th Member of 2010 Bball Recruiting Class

Berend Weijs, a 6-foot-10 power forward from Harcum (Pa.) College, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at the University of Maryland, head coach Gary Williamsannounced Thursday. Weijs, who will have two seasons of eligibility with Maryland, averaged 6.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.4 blocks per game for the Bears, who finished 26-3 this season. His 119 blocks set a school record at Harcum, which is located in Bryn Mawr, Pa.  The Maryland recruiting class was recently ranked 21st in the nation by ESPN.com.

BEREND WEIJS (6-10, Power Forward, Harcum (Pa.) College, Amsterdam, Netherlands)

Set a school record with 119 blocked shots in 27 games for Harcum, which spent some time ranked No. 1 in the nation in the NJCAA rankings…  Played high school basketball at Ichthus in the Netherlands…

Williams on Weijs: “Berend is a 6-10 very agile and mobile post player. With his size, skill and athleticism he will be able to contribute to our team immediately. He played on a very good junior college team and for a very good coach. We are extremely excited about Berend joining our program.”

The Terrapins now have the needed 4th man to round out the big man rotation. Remember, Berend has played JUCO fo r2 years—he will certainly be able to contribute. What I especially like is that it was the Terrapin players who had scrimmaged with this kid, who went to the coaching staff with glowing comments. Berend told terrapintimes.com that it was like a dream come true for him.
