Maryland had three players selected in the 2011 Major League Soccer SuperDraft Thursday, led by junior Zac MacMath, who was chosen by the Philadelphia Union with the fifth overall pick. MacMath, a two-time All-American at Maryland, was tabbed by the Union as the first goalkeeper chosen in the three-round draft. The U-20 national team product chose to forgo his senior season with the Terps to enter this year’s field. MacMath, a native of St. Petersburg, Fla., joins former Terrapin assistant coach Rob Vartughian in Philadelphia and should challenge Brad Knighton for playing time immediately. Also selected in this year’s draft were seniors Billy Cortes and Jason Herrick. Cortes was scooped up with the 38th overall pick by the New York Red Bulls. Herrick landed with his hometown Chicago Fire at No. 45.
