The Kings Speech—2 Related Stories

1—Watching the movie reminds me of a story about Bill Walton, the great UCLA center. Bill stuttered for most of his early years through college. When he was finally cured, he remarked to his family that he would never be the first to end a conversation or discussion. Years later, he became a powerhouse sportscaster and speaker. So I am at an Associated charity event with Steve Mackler where Bill is the main guest. Bill regaled tales about college basketball emphasizing what he knew about Terrapin basketball. As he closed his talk, he reminded everyone about his pledge to keep on going after the event if anyone wanted to talk with him. This was about 10:30. Almost 2 hours later Mack and myself were still talking to Bill. No one was left in the building when we finally felt guilty and said goodbye. Walton responded, remember you guys left first.  A great night with one of the greatest collegiate players of all time.

2—Edward, the Duke of Windsor has long been thought of as a Nazi sympathizer. Many in American intelligence believed Edward advised Hitler on Germany’s successful attack on Paris. He wanted his throne back and was willing to help Hitler in any way figuring if Hitler conquered Britain, he would be reinstalled as Supreme leader. In 1945 Churchill banished Edward to the Bahamas far away where he could do  damage.
