A Great Day With “Chocolate Thunder” Darryl Dawkins

I had the opportunity to spend Wednesday with just a fantastic guy–Darryl Dawkins better known as Chocolate thunder or Dr Dunkenstein. Darry was doing a meet and greet at a trade show in the Philadelphia area for the Martin Greenbaum Co. His popularity in Philly was overwhelming with nearly 1000 exhibitors and guests getting pictures and autograghs from him. I had a chance to talk with him and the following were some of the pearls of wisdom from the former great 76er.

–A little background on Dawkins. After turning down 350 scholarship offers, Darryl opted to become the first player to go straight from high school to the NBA. Most people think the first guy was Moses Malone but remember Moses went to the ABA bypassing his commitment to Maryland. Darryl said his advisors were his mom and his priest. He was the 5th pick in the 1975 NBA draft.

–Darryl’s prediction for the final four –Kentucky though expressing little fondness for the slickster Calipari.

–On Jimmer Fredette–a definite NBA player and possibly a star.

–Toughest guy he ever played against–Bob Lanier with nate Thurmond a close second.

–Best point guard he ever played with–not Wally Jones, not Hal Greer–but World B Free

–Darryl will be on The Sports maven Saturday Morning at 9AM –Tune in

pretty sure the 350 scholarship offers is a gross exaggeration.
