The heavyweight showdown between the No. 4 University of Maryland women’s soccer team and No. 1 Stanford ended in a 0-0 tie Friday night at Ludwig Field.
“Tonight was a tale of two halves,” said Maryland head coach Brian Pensky. “Stanford is a terrific team and a terrific program and I think we were a little passive at the start. Gradually, through the first half and into the second we started to realize we could play with them.”
The Cardinal (2-0-1) had a 10-2 advantage in shots in the first half, but many were from range. Those that were on net were kept out of the net by some spectacular efforts by senior goalkeeper Yewande Balogun, who made five of her 11 saves in the first 45 minutes of play.
